Unit 818. Getting in trouble can be better than lying.

 

At a young age, I found out that lying is not going to prevent you from getting into trouble.

Growing up, I was a pretty well-behaved child, not too mischievous, and I rarely got into trouble.

However, on one occasion, when I was still fairly young,

I did something silly and I was afraid of getting into trouble, so I lied about it to my parents.

Later on, they somehow found out, and they were so, so upset with me,

not because I had done something silly, but because I had lied about it to them later.

They thought I was unlike other kids and that I was always open and honest with them.

And seeing how disappointed they were in my actions hurt me so, so much,

and I myself was also disappointed for what I had done.

And since then, I just don't lie to my parents,

because I feel like it's better to do something silly but then be honest about it and get into a little bit of trouble for it

As a young boy in elementary school, I was always getting into trouble.

If you look at my life today, I suppose anyone could say that I lead a successful life.

But that wasn't always the case.

When I was a young boy in elementary school,

my behavior was out of control and I was getting into trouble constantly.

I think one of the main reasons I was in trouble with the teachers at an early age

was because the work was very easy and I could finish it quickly.

And therefore, during the time after I'd finish, when other students were still finishing an assignment,

I was misbehaving inside the classroom.

So when the report cards came, I was always terrified that I was going to get into trouble with my mother

because I didn't have a high mark on the self-control category on the report card.

I don't miss those days at all.

Over the New Year's holidays, I flew over to Canada to visit my family,

and my sister and I spent quite a bit of time reminiscing about our childhood.

but I remember vividly how terrified I always was of our mother and her fury.

I was a mischievous little kid, and I would always be prone to getting hurt.

So both my sister and I vividly remember how I would run up to her,

because in my mind, that was equal to getting in trouble.

Nobody knows why, but just thinking of my mother's face when she saw me hurt just sent shivers down my back.

Now as an adult, I understand that she probably wasn't angry with me.

She was just very worried and had to hide her panic with anger.

Unit 822. I got in trouble for staying up late.

 

When I was in high school, if I didn't sleep early, I would always get in trouble.

Back when I was in high school, which was a little while ago now,

I used to get in trouble from my mom if I didn't sleep early enough.

So if I was up late studying or doing something like that,

she would always be like, “Sara, go to bed!” when it was, like, 10 p.m.

And if I didn't sleep by then, I would get in trouble

because it was my fault for not studying enough during the day, because her thinking was …

Whoa, it's windy … because her thinking was if you don't get it done early enough, well, then you're not organized.

So I quite like that thinking because it forced me to try and get things done during the day

rather than leaving it until the last minute and then trying to do it, like, at midnight,

which I feel like that doesn't work for me, that kind of study anyway.

So it was always really good I guess in the end that I got in trouble for that,

because she was very good at training me into going to bed early.

So I quite like that thinking because it forced me to try and get things done during the day

그래서 저도 그렇게 생각하는 게 마음에 드는데, 그게 제가 낮에 할 일을 다 끝내도록 만들어 줬거든요.

 

rather than leaving it until the last minute and then trying to do it, like, at midnight,

마지막 순간까지 미뤄 뒀다가 자정에 하려고 하는 대신에 말이에요.

 

which I feel like that doesn't work for me, that kind of study anyway.

그런 식으로 공부하는 건 어차피 저한테는 잘 안 맞는 것 같아요.
