Having a job is quintessential to survive in our modern world, but searching for a job can be quite a struggle.

One of the reasons why I quit East Asian studies and changed my major to dentistry

was the fear of not finding a proper job once I'd graduate.

With dentistry, it's very simple and a safe bet because we have a huge deficit of medical job seekers in Germany,

the perfect conditions to find a job easily and also have a high salary from the start.

But not everyone plays it safe.

There are young people, entrepreneurs, who start out with an idea, not knowing if it will bear fruit in the future.

And rather than “job seekers,” I'd call them “opportunity seekers”

because they always look out for the perfect conditions, sponsors, and trends that can help their idea to take flight.

Unit 805. Job searching can be tough in a foreign country.

 

Job searching can be tough, difficult, stressful, and draining. But, in the end, if you find the right job, it's all worth it.

Job searching sucks, and don't believe anybody who tells you otherwise. I'm joking.

The hardest thing I find about job searching is having to face rejection

even when you're trying your hardest and doing your best at every single application.

Personally, I only had to deal with job searching as a foreigner in a country that I live in.

So in addition to all the stresses of job searching, I also had to deal with work permits, visas, etc., etc.

That's why so many students from other countries here in the U.K.

are bound to go home after completing their studies at a British university.

---------------------------------------------------

Because when you go and apply for a company straight out of university with little work experience, like I did,

and you also on top of that ask them to sponsor a visa,

your chances of getting the job are close to zero.

But don't get discouraged. Yes, it is difficult, but

I still managed to find a job that I love and that sponsored my visa. So, it is possible.

To nail home a very important point about job searching in the United States,

if you are in the market for new employment and you live here, you must have reliable transportation.

This is a vital fact.

Most people don't live within walking distance of where they're going to work,

and transportation for the public is scarce.

So having a car or having access to a vehicle is the most important thing in a job search, other than your qualifications.

And I think this is a big misconception about the U.S.

Searching for a job is definitely frustrating, but I do enjoy the fact that I don't have to be at work right now.

It's not always fun being between jobs.

Trying to search for a new job can be frustrating.

You have to consistently update your résumé.

You've got to send emails, follow-up emails.

You might get an interview and then you go to the interview,

but there's a second round of interviews, or you don't even get past the first round.

It's just, it's just frustrating sometimes, trying to deal with it.

But at the same time, I kind of enjoy it.

I mean, not the work part of it and not the applying for jobs, but … I mean, look at this.

It is the middle of the day and I don't have to be at an office.

So even though I'm not making any money, I should at least enjoy the fact that I have a little bit of free time now

before I have to work a nine-to-five or 12 hours a day and get a real job.

The job search is frustrating, but the free time I've had to write has been incredible. All in all, life is exciting right now.

You might get an interview and then you go to the interview,

but there's a second round of interviews, or you don't even get past the first round.

그렇지만 2차 면접이 있을 수도 있고, 첫 번째 면접도 통과하지 못할 수도 있어요.

It is the middle of the day and I don't have to be at an office.

지금 한낮인데 저는 어디 사무실에 있지 않아도 돼요.

 

So even though I'm not making any money, I should at least enjoy the fact that I have a little bit of free time now

그래서 저는 돈을 전혀 벌고 있지는 않지만, 최소한 현재 조금 자유 시간이 있다는 사실은 즐겨야 해요.

 

before I have to work a nine-to-five or 12 hours a day and get a real job.
