This special year marks the capstone to this past decade.

Ten years have passed as if in the blink of an eye.

I graduated from high school, started one major, changed to another, traveled,

picked up a few hobbies and also languages along the way.

And now, at the beginning of a new year, I wonder how much can be accomplished in the upcoming decade.

I'm about to receive my diploma and also start working as a dentist,

so just the prospect of this makes me so excited.

I'd love to start off this new year with an internship at a famous dental clinic,

and after that really start to create some stress-busting me time because those five years of med school were hard.

And, most importantly, I'd love to share some quality time with my family

and also move our family business ideas forward because we own our own dental clinic.

So there's a lot of work waiting for me and a lot of energy that wants to be shared.

New Year's resolutions can be hard to keep, but if you set reasonable, manageable goals, I think you'll find it's easier to follow them.

I always end up quitting or forgetting them halfway through the year,

and so I always end up feeling like I'm failing at my New Year's resolution.

But not this year! I have decided that I am going to make a more reasonable and manageable New Year's resolution,

which I think a lot of people also have the same problem.

We make these broad generalizations or some, you know, unattainable goal,

and I think that leads us to feeling a little more disappointed.

But if we set smaller, more manageable goals,

it's something that we will be able to follow through with throughout the year.

So for me, I'm going to be focusing a little more on my health

and committing to having one morning a week where I don't book myself full of a schedule,

and I just take time to have some breakfast and do some exercise before starting my day.

Last year I said that I don't really do New Year's resolutions, and that still hasn't changed.

People always ask you every time around sort of December or January,

“Oh, what's your New Year's resolution?” You know, “What are you going to do?”

And I never have anything to tell them. I never make New Year's resolutions.

I just … It doesn't mean I don't have things I want to improve about myself.

But generally, when I have those thoughts of wanting to change something,

I just kind of make steps to make it happen, because why wait until January 1st?

It seems unnatural to me to put a time around it, to be like, “Ooh, this is the day I'm going to do this thing and be amazing.”

And then I feel like I would set myself up to fail because it's like,

“Oops, I didn't do it on the first of January. I'll just have to wait till next year.”

Because that's definitely something that I would do.

So instead of New Year's resolutions, I just kind of … If I'm like, “Oh, I need to exercise more”

well, then I start exercising more.

You don't always stick at it, just like New Year's resolutions, but I think it's important to not wait on these things.

Last year I said that I don't really do New Year's resolutions, and that still hasn't changed.

작년에 저는 새해 결심을 하지 않는다고 말했었는데, 지금도 마찬가지예요.

People always ask you every time around sort of December or January,

사람들은 항상 12월이나 1월이 되면 묻죠.

 

“Oh, what's your New Year's resolution?” You know, “What are you going to do?”

“새해 다짐이 어떻게 되나요?” “뭐 할 거예요?” 같은 걸요.

 

And I never have anything to tell them. I never make New Year's resolutions.

그리고 저는 항상 해 줄 말이 없어요. 새해 다짐을 전혀 하지 않거든요.

 And  ;  그리고 라는 뜻이기도 하지만 그러면 이라는 뜻이기도 하다.

저 스스로에 대해서 개선하고 싶은 것들이 없다는 뜻은 아니에요.

 

But generally, when I have those thoughts of wanting to change something,

그런데 대체로, 뭔가를 바꾸고 싶은 생각이 있을 때,

I just kind of make steps to make it happen, because why wait until January 1st?

저는 그냥 그걸 하기 위한 조치를 해요. 굳이 1월 1일까지 기다릴 필요가 없으니까요.

It seems unnatural to me to put a time around it, to be like, “Ooh, this is the day I'm going to do this thing and be amazing.”

뭔가 시간을 정해서 한다는 게 부자연스럽게 보여요. “이날에 나는 이런 걸 하고 멋진 사람이 될 거야.”처럼요.

And then I feel like I would set myself up to fail because it's like,

그러면 실패를 할 수밖에 없는 것 같은 게, 그 이유는 이렇게 생각하기 때문이에요.

 

“Oops, I didn't do it on the first of January. I'll just have to wait till next year.”

“앗, 1월 1일에 그걸 안 했네. 내년까지 기다려야겠다.”고요.

Because that's definitely something that I would do.

왜냐하면 저는 분명히 그렇게 할 것 같거든요.

 

So instead of New Year's resolutions, I just kind of … If I'm like, “Oh, I need to exercise more”

그래서 새해 다짐을 하는 대신에, 저는 그냥 “운동을 더 해야겠다”라고 생각하면,

 

well, then I start exercising more.

그러면 운동을 더 하기 시작하는 거예요.

 

You don't always stick at it, just like New Year's resolutions, but I think it's important to not wait on these things.

새해 다짐과 마찬가지로, 항상 지켜지는 건 아니지만, 그런 건 미루지 않는 게 중요한 것 같아요.
