Unit 798. I don’t need a lot of close friends.

 

When I was younger, I had many people who I call my best friends. But now, after life happened, I have a few, but it doesn't discourage me.

When I was younger and in high school, I had many people who I called my best friends.

They were my classmates who I saw almost every day, for many hours in the day,

and it felt right to call them that.

But when we graduated, things got a little more difficult.

People drifted apart, did different things with their lives, and it never felt right to call them my best friends again.

Even now, I have a smaller number of people who I call my best friends, but it doesn't discourage me.

I actually feel like I can give the people who I call my best friends a lot more of my effort, my time, and my love.

And so it actually encourages me that I have very few best friends,

because the few best friends I have, we have a very special bond.

The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart.

And it's true. Kids often assume that it's the quantity of visits that helps the friendship last,

until they grow up and realize that it's actually the quality of shared time

that helped them to stick together through thick and thin.

For true friendships, age doesn't matter, as well as language and cultural differences.

What matters is that the seed of friendship is planted with care

and also give you a wake-up call when it's necessary.

And my thoughts on best friends is that the term implies that you can have only one significant, special friend in your life,

Unit 800. Making new friends is a great thing.

 

I think friendship is something that you can cultivate, and I really encourage everybody to do this.

English On The Go

I grew up in Vienna, Austria, and I lived there until I was around 18 years old.

And I had an automatic friendship group because I met these friends when I was very little, probably at elementary school,

and we continued to go to school together and see each other every day.

And this just automatically developed into a friendship.

-------------------------------------------------------

However, when I moved away from home to pursue further studies and to start working in different countries,

I realized that friendship was no longer going to be given to me automatically.

It was something that I had to actively pursue.

And this was something I very much struggled with at first

because it was difficult to approach a random person and introduce myself and strike a conversation

and hope that a friendship would blossom out of it.

However, if anything, now I really enjoy doing that.

And I encourage everybody to be open to the idea of meeting new people every day,

and not just to stick to your old friendship group but to continue broadening that group

and to be open to the idea of meeting people with different backgrounds, different upbringings,

because there is so much you can learn from creating such friendships.

When Hyunwoo gave me the topic of friendship, the first thing that came to my mind was Nichola.

When Hyunwoo gave me this topic about friendship to talk about,

I was going to speak on it in a sort of broad spectrum about what friendship means.

But then I thought I would take the opportunity to talk about someone

who is an extremely good friend of mine and who is … who their friendship means so much. It means the world.

You might know her, Nichola Gwon, because she does online content as well.

But her friendship means everything to me.

I don't know what I did in a past life to end up with a friend like her,

because she's so understanding and she's so caring and she's so kind

that I just ... every day I just wake up and I'm so happy and I can't wait to message her or talk to her on the phone.

And I think that's what friendship is, isn't it?

It's just loving and supporting each other, caring about each other, messaging each other silly texts.

Recently, I've realized that it has gotten a lot more difficult to keep up with all of the friendships that I've had and also make new friends.

Recently, I've come to a conclusion that after a certain age,

it gets very difficult to not only make friends but also maintain the friendships that you already have.

When I was in school, making friends was so easy.

You were almost forced to get along with people just because you had to spend most of your days with them.

Our lives were also a lot less busy than those of your average working, grown-up adults.

We could just hang out after school without having to worry about paying bills, doing laundry, or finding a job.

Nowadays, I find myself so busy, I don't even have time to talk to my family, let alone friends.

And don't get me started on trying to organize a get-together with all your friends.

Everyone's too busy, it's too complicated, and there's just too many things to juggle around.

But I do have a couple of childhood friends with whom I don't talk often, but when we do,

it's like we're back to being carefree teenagers with heaps of dreams and hopes and excitement for the future.

I don't think people understand how hard it is to maintain long-distance friendships when you're trying to make friends in your new area of living. It's so hard to keep up with everyone in every location.

  이사를 가서 새로운 삶의 터전에서 친구 관계를 만들때 장거리에 떨어져있는 친구들이 관계를 유지하는데 얼마나 어려운지 사람들이 이해를 못하는 것 같다. 모든 위치에 있는 모두와 관계를 계속해 나가는 것이 참 힘들다.
