Unit 618. Manners can cause problems.

Manners can cause problems sometimes.
English on the go
Manners can cause problems sometimes.
So in England, we're very famous for being very polite and having a lot of manners.
We're also famous for the phrase "keep a stiff upper lip,"
which means that you shouldn't show your suffering you need to hang in there and keep going.
Because of this mix of being polite and not showing your suffering, we don't like to complain
even if there is a problem.
So quite often if you're in a restaurant, for example, a waiter will ask, "How is your meal?"
And even if we hate the meal, we are too polite to say that we didn't enjoy it, and we will say, "It's fine."
Then we'll just leave, and we won't return to that business.
And then the people working there never know what went wrong.
And actually it causes quite a lot of shock between Americans and British people
because we're very surprised at how much Americans will just complain if there's something wrong,
whereas we are just too polite.
We will not say anything.
