Everyday Grammar : Could Have, Would Have

" modals of lost opportunity. "

* COULD HAVE means that something was possible in the past, but it did not happen.

" I could have travelled the world, but I never got a passport. "

* COULD NOT HAVE means that something was impossible in the past.

" I could not have travelled the world, because I never got a passport. "


* WOULD HAVE  2개 뜻 중 한가지 

that shows how you wanted to do something in the past, but you could not.

* I would have A, but I had to B.

" I would have called, but I had to work. "


* use COULD HAVE when something did not happen.

* use WOULD HAVE when something could not happen.




You could have helped me !  

너는 나를 도와줄 수도 있었어 !

He could have at least left a message for me.  

최소한 나한테 메모는 남길 수 있었잖아.

I wish I could have been more at ease on my blind date.   

볼 때 좀 더 여유있는 태도를 보였다면 좋았을 텐데.

At least you could have asked for your boss's advice.  

최소한 사장님께 어떻게 해야 할지 물어 볼 수도 있었잖아요.

I could have won the race, but I tripped over a stone.

그 경주에서 이길 수 있었는데 돌에 걸려 넘어졌어.


Who would have dreamed?

누가 꿈이나 꿨겠어요?

He would have joined our meeting, only you objected.

당신만 반대하지 않았더라면 그는 우리들 모임에 참가하였을 것입니다.

Anybody would have done the same.

어느 누구라도 그렇게 했을 거에요.

Without his advice, I would have failed.

그의 충고가 없었더라면 나는 실패했을 것이다.

He would have come if you had invited him.

네가 그를 초청했었더라면 그는 왔을 텐데.

If I had been there, I would have told him the truth.

만일 내가 거기 있었더라면 그에게 사실을 알렸을텐데.
